Repair of 2 pieces propeller shafts for the Danish Navy's support ship L16 Absalon

Back to case overview

The repair included shaft run-out in-situ at a Danish shipyard and hence we received the 2 propeller shafts Ø880/390 x 21140 mm in our workshop in Hirtshals.
The starboard propeller shaft was bend and was cold straightened in our hydraulic press. Both stern journals on the shafts were repaired with laser cladding, which is a welding technique carried out with a robot. -This laser cladding does not affect the material and therefore heat treatment for stress release is not necessary - saving valuable repair time for the customer.  The repair was class-approved by DNV-GL.

A German film team from MAXIMUS film came to shoot the DIE test carried out by Force Technology. They are making a documentary about the repair. It will be among a series of 5-documentaries that Discovery Channel and others will air fall 2018.
